Does God Give Us More than We Can Handle?

Paul answers this in 2 Corinthians chapter 1.

I’ve heard countless people say, “God doesn’t give you more than you can handle.” These empty words are repeated as a condolence when something bad happens or an admonition to stop worrying. The saying may come from a bad paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 10:13, which explains that God always gives you a way out when you are tempted.

The truth is that in this life we will come to places where our personal resources are entirely overwhelmed and insufficient. This is a wonderful thing and will work to your benefit if you take the opportunity to turn to God. Paul says this in 2 Corinthians 1:

8 We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about the troubles we experienced in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired of life itself. 9 Indeed, we felt we had received the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead. 10 He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us again. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us, 11 as you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many.

We don’t realize Jesus is everything until we realize we have nothing. When you run into trouble that’s far over your head, take the opportunity to rely on God, not on yourself.
