National Super Alliance (NASA) Presidential candidate, Raila Odinga over the weekend left the country for Israel to attend an international conference. The ODM leader has now shared photos while praying at the Western Wall, one of Israel’s most popular religious sites in Jerusalem leaving Kenyans startled. The Western Wall -in the midst of the Old City in Jerusalem- is the section of the Western supporting wall of the Temple Mount which has remained intact since the destruction of the Second Jerusalem Temple (70 C.E.).
Also called the Wailing Wall, it became the most sacred spot in Jewish religious, national consciousness and tradition by virtue of its proximity to the Western Wall of the Holy of Holies in the Temple.
It’s believed that any prayer said at the wall always reaches God. President Uhuru Kenyatta also visited the wall in 2016 while in Jerusalem and Donald Trump is also expected to visit the wall on May 22. Raila penned a letter explaining his visit saying that he has been writing wishes for the country since his time in detention and he has been taking the wishes to the wall every time he visits the country.
“For those of you who may not know Detention is a miserable place with time mostly spent alone,” says Raila in the letter. “I began the tradition of writing down my wishes for this country during my time in Detention. Those days it would take sometimes six months to pass letters between my loved ones and myself. With a lot of time on my hands, I used to write down the many wishes I had for the people of Kenya.”
