Mombasa Pastors Angered By Christian Radio Station After Airing Politics And Playing Secular Music

A group of clerics have sued a Christian radio station in Mombasa for allegedly broadcasting secular content, including politics and other no-religious material.

The pastors under the auspices of Mombasa Pastors Fellowship Association have accused the directors of Baraka FM of converting the station into a secular station.

Through lawyer Leonard Shimaka, the matter was certified as urgent before resident Judge Eric Ogola asking the court to issue orders stopping the station from airing secular content.

The clerics alleged that the decision violates Christians’ right in the region as the founders and sponsors of the radio station known as Baraka FM are listed as the first Christian radio station in Kenya.

The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) and the Attorney-General have been listed as second and third respondents.

Shimaka wanted the court to issue a temporary injunction restraining the first and second respondents jointly and severally from broadcasting non-religious content pending hearing and determination of the matter.

In their constitutional petition, the pastors argued that being stakeholders, they had sought the broadcast licence of Baraka FM for the sole reason of religious broadcasts at the Coast.

Justice Eric Ogola directed parties to file their responses to the suit within 14 days and set the hearing for October 16.
