3 Simple Ways To Position Yourself for Hearing God

Want to jumpstart your ability to hear God?

One of the questions I hear most often from people is, “How do you hear God so clearly?”

Since I release Daily Prophetic Words online, I write prophetic blogs weekly and monthly and even publish a yearly Prophetic Forecast book, people tell me that the things that God gives me seem to match what is happening in their lives.

Yes, I have developed my prophetic gifts over the years. But I started hearing God more consistently when I started to do a few simple things that God showed me. The key is being consistent.

Here Are 3 Simple Steps to Hearing God Better:

1. Practice

If you want to hear God clearly in your life it will take practice. Do not be afraid to make a mistake. In fact, God will use our mess-ups to help sharpen us. Spiritual gifts are not given to us in a mature state. The more we use them, and the more training we seek out, the better we will understand and the clearer things become.

“But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.” Hebrews 5:14 NIV

Some people spend more time and energy on their hobbies, sports or cars than they do taking time to listen to God.

When you pray, do not do all the talking! Balance it out with taking time to listen. God most often speaks in the stillness within us and we need to slow down to hear Him.

 2. Clear The Clutter

I know we are all busy, and adding one more thing to your day might not be what you want to do. So it will help if you find the best time that works for your life. It really is not necessary to spend long extended times listening to God.

I find that no matter how busy I am, taking time to listen to the voice of God—even for a few minutes—helps me gain focus for my day. Sometimes He speaks through reading the Bible or maybe it will be a song on the radio or a message on a billboard.

“Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.” Mark 1:35 NIV

Take a few minutes each day and ask God what it is you need for today.

3. Write It Down

When I tell people that I journal 365 days a year they look at me strangely—like I am from another planet.

First of all, when I even say the word journaling I get a lot of negative reactions. Because most people equate journaling with “Dear Diary” or “getting your emotions out there.”

But when it comes to hearing God, there is no better way to start understanding it than by writing down what you are hearing.

Sadly, journaling seems to leave a bad taste in people’s mouths. I hear, “Oh, I am not the journaling type.”

But not writing things down is blocking many people from receiving the most valuable advice I can give them when it comes to hearing God.

There is something about placing a value on God’s words to us.

“Blessed are those who listen to me, watching daily at my doors, waiting at my doorway.” Proverbs 8:34 NIV

I do not journal in the way that most people do. A few years ago, I began spending time writing down things I heard God saying. It is not all that formal and often I do it in bullet points.

It was when I started to journal that opened up an amazing world to me that allows me to see things in a times and seasons fashion. My ability to hear God not only increased when I started journaling, but I have also developed my ability to understand, and gain wisdom and timing. So, if you want to hear God more clearly for the coming season, practicing these 3 simple steps consistently will position you to receive more.

Get ready to cross over into a new season of hearing God’s voice!
