Whenever the gang ran out of options, we would invade our immediate families and take off with anything we could lay our hands on.
At what point did you move to the wild?
The villagers were baying for my blood and no one except my grandparents were on my side.
I moved into a jungle for more than six months to avoid being lynched by angry villagers. I would only sneak back to the village in the dead of the night to get food from my grandmother and then sneak back to the bushes.
Were you ever caught?
Yes, after a long stay in the wild, I came back and was caught. Police saved me from mob justice and I was taken to court and sentenced to one year in Kisumu prison.
Did going to jail change you?
Not really. I met hard-core criminals in there and acquired more skills. After serving my term, I moved to Hama Island on Lake Victoria where I engaged in fish robbery for more than six years.
We would steal from fishermen who had cast their net.
Were you ever caught?
How? When I had graduated into a ‘professor’ from prison? We covered our tracks and on no single day were we caught or even suspected. We pretended to be fishermen out to earn a living.
When did salvation come knocking?
While on the island, I bumped into my stepsister who convinced me to see a witchdoctor in Uganda to release me from my miserable life.
Did you go?
We went but we never reached our destination after being conned by our guide at Namungodi roadblock in Uganda.
