I’ve never been one of those people who go crazy over sunsets. The sun bidding adieu for the night? Big deal! I say goodnight and turn off the lights all the time. But do people crowd around and take photos of me as I do so? I don’t think so.
Maybe, though, I just wasn’t looking at the right sunset.
Two weeks ago, I went down to Florida to visit my parents for July 4. As you might remember, I take the beach very seriously. So I was determined to soak up the sun every moment of my trip. One day, my mom and I stayed out on the beach late. We were about to leave when we noticed all the beachgoers around us getting ready for something.
“You know, people say there’s nothing like the sunsets here,” my mom said. I wasn’t sure who these “people” were, but I wanted to see if they were right.
Around 8:30 p.m., the sky got dark. Colors washed across the sky in every shade of orange, pink, purple and blue. My mom and I were completely in awe. And we weren’t alone. Everyone on the beach seemed mesmerized.
“Oh my gosh, it’s so beautiful,” a woman nearby said.
I couldn’t stop taking photos of the wonder unfolding before my eyes, even though no snapshot did it justice. To think of all the thought and beauty God put into that sun setting. And that’s just the sun setting! I can only imagine how much thought and beauty He’s put into our lives, too.
I may not be a sunset person. But that was one of the most memorable parts of my trip.
God bless you, Amen!
