The leader of Zimbabwe’s ruling party’s youth wing has compared President Robert Mugabe to Jesus Christ.
Speaking at an event in the past week, Kudzai Chipanga, the ZANU-PF Youth League’s leader, added that Mugabe’s upcoming birthday is therefore no ordinary day and should be celebrated like Christmas Day.
He also said President Mugabe is “our savior” and his leadership is messianic as well as full of divine wisdom, hence his elevation to being second to Jesus Christ.
The 92-year-old veteran leader is turning 93 on February 21. During the event, Kudzai said Zimbabweans should celebrate Mugabe’s birthday in the same way they observe Christmas.
However, his comments have sparked condemnation from various sections of Zimbabwe’s society. Some have called his praise of Mugabe “blasphemous” and “bootlicking,” while others said he should not be taken seriously as he was aiming to please the president for patronage purposes.
President Mugabe has ruled Zimbabwe since 1980.
