5 Things That Block You From Hearing God (And The Solutions)

Do you want to hear God’s voice more clearly in your life? We are in a time and season where God is speaking to us through prophetic words, dreams and visions. The main purpose for the prophetic and hearing God can be found in this Bible verse:

”I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.”
Ephesians 1:17 NIV

The Internet is an amazing tool to research and get trained. But the Internet is also full of conflicting messages about spiritual things. God is moving in new unprecedented ways and this is a time to sharpen our ability to hear His voice.

So I want to outline 5 things I have been seeing that are negatively affecting our ability to hear God and then I want to give you a solution to break through each of them.

Some of these blocks are older theologies that worked in a previous season, but are not as effective today. Others are distortions of the Bible developed by people who do not believe that God can still speak today. But remember: The purpose of us hearing God is to know Him better and help others do the same!

5 Things That Block You—and Solutions to Break Through Them

1. Doubt and unbelief.
These could very well be the reason why many people are not hearing God clearly. An example of this can be found in Matthew 13:58 where Jesus was not able to do many miracles due to the unbelief of the people in the place he was ministering.

It is possible to believe that God still speaks to us today, but you may doubt that He wants to speak to you.

Solution: Get bold and ask God to speak to you and if you already hear Him, then ask for more.

2. Trying to understand God logically.
Faith requires us to believe things that we might not currently see (Hebrews 11:1). If we get too logical then we can miss the deeper things of God. We do not have to explain everything as the supernatural side of God cannot always be explained.

Solution: If you tend to be a logical person then ask God to give you a sign that you will know something is from Him.

3. Lack of instruction and training.
Most Christians rely on the discipleship of their local church. Pastors and teachers are not usually equipped to train effectively on more advanced levels of hearing God and biblical dream interpretation. I am not being judgmental here as I have been a pastor and I honor anyone willing to take on that job.

Solution: Going to conferences and taking online workshops and courses on the Internet can be beneficial for learning more about the prophetic. (Right now you can do a 14-Day Free Test Drive in our Hearing the Voice of God 365 online prophetic activation school. Check it out here.)

4. Too much focus on the demonic.
If you focus too much on the demonic, that is all you will see. People everywhere are spending way too much time on looking for demons instead of God’s angels.

”If you search for good, you will find favor; but if you search for evil, it will find you!” Proverbs 11:27 NLT

Here is a test: If we start talking about identifying an angel in the room many Christians get uncomfortable and do not believe. But if we identify a demon there would be 100% agreement. That represents a sad condition in the church today and reinforces my first point on unbelief.

Solution: Ask God to open your spiritual eyes and ears to His good things and not just demons.

5. Too much emphasis on what is wrong with ourselves, others and the world and not enough focus and attention on God’s goodness in us!
This is a serious condition that I call “over sanctification.” The result of looking too deeply in your self on a continual basis will get your eyes off of Jesus and His saving grace. This is also a condition of Spiritual Identity Theft, where we focus too much on dying to ourselves over living for God. It is a fine line that gets us out of balance.

The good news is that if you suffer from any of these or know someone who does, it is not difficult to change. In fact, you can do it right now.

Breaking through these things will help you skyrocket into a season of hearing God more clearly for yourself and others. This is an exciting time and God has not forgotten you or your situation.

Blessings.
